Summary: The HFTS tour is finally over and TR have returned home. Lauri's partner is suddenly called away soon after but can an inexperienced rock star dad handle a baby for just one night? Read on to find out...
Part One:
Our two years of touring is finally at an end and at last we can return to our beloved families. At the airport on the final leg of our long journey, the silence is filled only by Pauli’s incessant typing and the occasional flap of a turning page. Lauri has kicked off his trainers and curled up across three chairs, chewing a thumb nail and shifting into various positions as we await the intercom announcement and boarding Flight 979 to Helsinki.
After a further two hour, we are settled on the plane and taking off. Aki gazes out the black window and Lauri resorts to his discarded rock sound in a poor attempt to relieve some boredom. I stare into space and think about my girls as the time slips by and we all escape into slumber, waking on Finnish soil.
Aki and Lauri cheer on the runway, hugging each other and celebrating sleepily, their dancing reminiscent of being drunk. Poor Hattu still has another journey to make, home on the train to Espoo and his precious cats. The four of us join together for a group huddle and take a moment to acknowledge our achievement of yet another world tour. Aki’s case comes through first and he leaves for the station with promises of phone calls and emails later in the week. Pauli departs second after a firm hug with both of us and shouts that he loves us to which Lauri replies, “You owe me a beer you wonderful b*****d!” My case is third and I offer to wait with Lauri for his but am dismissed. “I love you but at last we are free and I feel suffocated, so get lost before I turn claustrophobic. Send my love to your lovely wife and children.”
“Same to yours old friend.” I worry about leaving him alone but it can’t be helped and I too head for home. It’s almost 3am and I’m exhausted.
After Eero had left, Lauri cursed his suitcase for being last and hailed a taxi to the end of his road. Two streets later, he fell through the front door and collapsed on the black leather sofa, breathing in a thousand days and nights of absence. He woke with the sun and walked all around the ground floor, seeing everything was almost exactly as he had left it. The alphabet magnets were arranged differently, spelling out new memos for Anna to remember and his Björk CD collection was spewing forth from the CD player, as though she had been trying to locate one in particular. She was hopeless at remembering anything except the dates when he was home. Lauri decided to give in and go up, his heart leaping at the opportunity to see his young son and wife after so long. The baby’s nursery was first on the landing and he entered cautiously, not wanting to disturb. However, his son was awake already and stared up at his father with large blue-green eyes. “Hei Niclas,” Lauri whispered and reached into the crib to lift the boy. “I’ve missed you. Did you miss me? You’re such a handsome boy, aren’t you? Yes you are.” Niclas gurgled happily and smiled, nuzzling into Lauri’s shoulder. “Can you say anything yet? Can you say ‘dada’? Or ‘mama’? Can you say ‘dada’?” He paused and received a smile and silence. “No? Okay then Nicky. I guess you’re not old enough yet, huh?” Lauri replaced his son and straightened, his eye caught by a white envelope with his name on it, propped between photo frames on the mantelpiece. Lintu, when you get back, please wake me up with a kiss and coffee. Anna xxx He smiled and stepped onto the landing to glance at the white door to their master bedroom. At that moment, all he wanted to do was run in and sweep her up in his arms, but it was best to follow her instructions rather than pretending to have missed them. Downstairs again, he fed Niclas and made himself and Anna a strong black coffee before going upstairs and gently nudging the door open with a foot. Resting the tray on the duvet, he placed a cup on her bedside table and saw a portrait photo of himself placed on the other. Lauri then bent down and caressed her velvet lips with his own, willing her to wake up and satisfy his greed for more. Anna’s almond shaped eyes fluttered open and she smiled immediately, “Hei Lintu honey.”
“Hei Anna.”
“You’ve seen Nicky then?”
“I have.”
“And you got my note?”
“I did.” Anna tugged Lauri down beside her and he curled around her, nestling into the warm bedclothes that smelled of sandalwood and jasmine. “I’ve missed you,” he whispered. “Did you miss me?”
“If I told you how much, you wouldn’t believe me.”
